I am Prajakta Kharat, currently pursuing my MBA at MKSSS’s Smt. Hiraben Nanavati Institute of Management and Research for Women.

As students, we often hear about the importance of education in transforming lives. But during our recent visit to Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha (MKSSS) in Pune, we truly felt it. Founded in 1896 by Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, this institution has been a beacon of hope and empowerment for countless women. From its humble beginnings in a small thatched hut, or Kutir, to becoming one of India’s most prestigious institutions for women’s education, the journey of MKSSS is nothing short of inspiring.

The Historic Kutir: Where It All Began

KutirKutir—a humble hut where it all started. Back in 1896, Maharshi Karve began his mission by teaching widows and young girls in this small thatched hut in Hingne. Standing in front of this small structure, I couldn’t help but imagine the challenges those early students must have faced. Yet, this Kutir, though modest, was the foundation of what would grow into one of India’s most prominent educational institutions for women. Even today, this Kutir stands as a powerful reminder of persistence and progressive thinking—proof that from small beginnings, great things can grow.

Matoshree Vrudhashram: Compassion in Action

Samstha VisitOne of the most touching parts of the visit was our time at Matoshree Vrudhashram, the old age home on the MKSSS campus. This home provides elderly women with shelter, care, and companionship. Activities like spiritual programs and games help women stay active, but most importantly, they receive the respect and love they deserve. It made us realize that MKSSS’s work extends far beyond just education—this institution supports women at every stage of life, ensuring dignity and care.

Vrindavan Baug Campus: Where Holistic Education Thrives

A standout part of our visit was exploring the Vrindavan Baug Campus, a vibrant educational hub set in a serene environment surrounded by greenery. This campus reflects MKSSS’s commitment to empowering women through quality education. We saw students excelling in diverse fields like engineering, management, and the arts, all within this inclusive and progressive learning environment.

Empowering Women Through Education

The heart of MKSSS lies in its focus on education. We were amazed by the number of institutions it houses, from Cummins College of Engineering for Women to Smt. Bakul Tambat Institute of Nursing Education. Walking through College Campus, we met confident young women who are not just learning—they’re thriving, leading, and breaking barriers. It made us reflect on how far women’s education has come, thanks to pioneers like Maharshi Karve.

Sampada Bakery: Building Skills, Building Futures

Another fascinating aspect of MKSSS is its focus on practical skill-building. We visited Sampada Bakery, which offers vocational training to women in baking and food preparation. It’s one thing to talk about empowering women, but MKSSS actively equips them with the tools to become financially independent.

Observations and Insights

As a student currently exploring the various facets of MKSSS, this visit has been both enlightening and inspiring. Seeing the breadth of MKSSS’s initiatives has provided a deeper understanding of how education and practical training can truly transform lives.

Experiencing the vibrancy of this campus firsthand, I feel a renewed sense of purpose and inspiration. MKSSS exemplifies how a dedicated vision can lead to lasting change and improvement in countless lives.
